Irene
Marie Dunne was born in Lousville, Kentucky. Her mother was
a musician who prompted Irene in the arts. From an early age
Irene desired to be a singer. From the age of five until she
was thirty-two she worked mostly as a singer and teacher of
music. In 1928 she married a young dentist named Francis Dennis
Griffin and the marriage lasted until his death in 1965. In
1930 she made her first film and in 1936 her first comedy.
Her films with Cary Grant such as The Awful Truth (1937)
and My Favorite Wife (1940) are classics today. She
was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress 5 times
but never won. The Kennedy Center honored her in 1985. Besides
her career in film she was appointed an alternative delegate
to the United Nations by President Eisenhower and served as
a board member of Technicolor.
