Eileen Farrell
1920-2002
Opera
Eileen Farrell was born into an Irish Vaudeville
family. Her
mother's maiden name was Kennedy and was very talented musically.
Her father was known on the Vaudeville circuit as "The
Irish Songbird." After her parents married they called
the act Farrell & Farrell or The Singing O'Farrell's.
They sang everything from Mozart to traditional Irish songs.
Clearly this is where Eileen got her love for classical and
popular music. Her early career was on radio and from 1947-1949
she did concert tours throughout the States and South America.
Her first appearance in New York was at Carnegie Hall in 1950
and from 1960-1966 she appeared in lead roles at the Metropolitan
Opera Company in New York. Her voice was noted for its enormous
power and tone. She sang pop, jazz and blues along with her
classical and operatic repertoire.
