Eileen Farrell

Eileen Farrell was born into an Irish Vaudeville family. Eileen FarrellHer mother's maiden name was Kennedy and was very talented musically. Her father was known on the Vaudeville circuit as "The Irish Songbird." After her parents married they called the act Farrell & Farrell or The Singing O'Farrell's. They sang everything from Mozart to traditional Irish songs. Clearly this is where Eileen got her love for classical and popular music. Her early career was on radio and from 1947-1949 she did concert tours throughout the States and South America. Her first appearance in New York was at Carnegie Hall in 1950 and from 1960-1966 she appeared in lead roles at the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York. Her voice was noted for its enormous power and tone. She sang pop, jazz and blues along with her classical and operatic repertoire.
