Donald O'Connor was born into a Vaudeville act. They called
the act The O'Connor
Family - Royal Family of Vaudeville. His father was Irish and
had many talents while his mother was a trapeze performer. They
met while working in the circus and then entered Vaudeville.
Donald claimed to be in his first show beside his mother on
stage when only 3 days old. Every kid added to the act raised
their weekly income another $25. Donald was their seventh child.
His first break came in 1939 when he was cast in the film Sing
You Sinners with Bing Crosby. He worked in a teen group
with Universal Studios called The Jivin Jacks and Jills before
being drafted into the Army in WWII. In 1949 Donald landed to
role of Peter Stirling in Francis the Talking Mule. He
would make five more films with the mule. In 1951 he was cast
as Cosmo Brown in Singing in the Rain. The acrobatic,
energetic and hilarious scene of "Make 'em Laugh"
is probably how most people remember Donald O'Connor.
